Furnace and heating repair
Furnace repair, American Standard installation and heat pump checks for homes in Houston, Spring and Cypress, with combustion and carbon monoxide on every list.
Chapter 01
The furnace that lights, runs a minute and quits
A Houston furnace sits idle for most of the year, then gets asked to work on the first properly cold morning with ten months of attic dust on it. The failures that follow are rarely dramatic. A dirty ignition assembly stops lighting the burners, a sooty burner assembly makes a ragged flame that trips the flame sensor, a blower motor with a tired capacitor can't move enough air, and the high-limit safety shuts everything down to protect the heat exchanger. From the hallway it all looks the same: the thermostat calls for heat, the house stays cold, and the furnace clicks.
Heat pumps fail differently. A heat pump that blows cool air in winter may have a stuck defrost control, a frozen outdoor coil or a dead auxiliary heating element, and each one points to a different repair. The gas side and the electric side of a heating system shouldn't be diagnosed by the same guess, which is why a visit starts by learning which kind of system is in the house, where the air handler sits, and what the last few cycles actually did.

Combustion, draft and carbon monoxide, in that order
Cool-It's furnace tune-up list is a safety procedure with a cleaning schedule attached: test for carbon monoxide leaks, clean the burner assembly, clean the ignition assembly, clean the blower motor, inspect filtration, adjust blower components, test and adjust safety controls, tighten electrical connections, check flue draft, check combustion, inspect vent piping and inspect the humidification system. The order matters. Combustion and draft decide whether exhaust leaves the house, so they're read with instruments rather than judged by eye, and the safety controls are tested so they trip when they should.
The photo above shows an American Standard furnace in an attic, badged and installed. Cool-It is an American Standard dealer, and its product range includes gas furnaces and heat pumps. A furnace installation starts with a free in-home consultation, proper sizing of the equipment to the house, financing through GreenSky for those who qualify, and full factory warranties on all equipment and labor. A reviewer named Randy S wrote about the quality of installation on a new American Standard AC and heating system, and the shop's older reviews page carries a December 2018 entry titled Heating Tune Up from a customer named Peggy.
For heat pumps and air handlers the checklist shifts to match the hardware. A heat pump tune-up checks the defrost controls and inspects the auxiliary heaters, and an air handler tune-up inspects the electrical heating elements. Those are the parts that decide whether the system keeps the house warm when Houston dips below freezing for the one week it does.
Chapter 03
Before the first cold snap, not during it
The cheapest time to find a cracked igniter or a loose vent connection is a mild October afternoon, not a Sunday night at thirty degrees. If your furnace hasn't run since March, turn it on this week and pay attention. A healthy burner flame burns blue and steady, the first start may smell faintly of warm dust for a few minutes, and the blower should run quietly and come up to speed without a rattle. Anything else, from a yellow flame to a burning smell that doesn't fade, is a reason to shut it off and call.
Treat a carbon monoxide detector that chirps as a real alarm, not a battery nuisance. Open the windows, get everyone outside, and call for service. Keep supply and return vents clear of furniture, change filters on schedule, and watch for short cycling, a furnace that turns on and off every few minutes instead of running a full cycle, because it usually means a restricted airflow or a safety control that is doing its job.
Cool-It, family-owned since 2009 and licensed in Texas as TACLB 28315E, takes heating calls from Houston, Spring and Cypress. The office at 12915 Cypress North Houston Rd in Cypress keeps Monday to Friday hours, and for urgent repairs or emergency service you can call (832) 316-2665 after hours too.
